DiscreetFX completes acquisition of Aladdin 4D

On December 17, 2007, DiscreetFX completed the acquisition of Aladdin 4D from Nova Design for an undisclosed sum of money. All remaining inventory of the current version is being shipped to DiscreetFX and Nova Design will no longer be selling this application. DiscreetFX is a leading developer of 3D digital video effects technology. This acquisition extends DiscreetFX's reach into 3D software development in the hobbist and beginner 3D animation industries. This also marks the first time DiscreetFX 100% controls an application. Before today we were always a 3rd party developer for other companies.

Aladdin 4D was a leading 3D animation program on the Classic Amiga platform and sold over 18,000 units on Amiga OS alone. DiscreetFX will breath new life into this application and release a new version on the following platforms.

Amiga OS 4.0 - For the first time Amiga OS 4.0 customers will have a professional PowerPC native application for their operating system to show off it's true potential. With the exception of Pagestream 5.0 Pro and Hollywood the amount of current professional commercial applications is very limited. There are no native 3D applications for OS 4.0, other Amiga developers left long ago for more lucrative platforms or went out of business.

AROS - For the first time AROS customers will have a professional native 3D animation application for their operating system to show off it's true potential. AROS has never had any commercial 3D software released for it.

MorphOS 2.0 - If a new version of MorphOS ships then a native version will also be produced for this exciting operating system. For the first time MorphOS 2.0 customers will have a professional PowerPC native 3D animation application for their operating system to show off it's true potential.

Mac OS X - Aladdin 4D has a rich heritage on the Amiga platform but never reached it's full potential since it was limited only to Amiga customers. The OS X version of Aladdin 4D will take full advantage of Core Animation/Core Image on Mac OS and should give Mac customers a new, fast and unique animation program to learn 3D and enjoy.

Linux - We are strongly considering doing a version for Linux but the expectation of open source and completely free software may hinder this release. Linux customers will have to show us a demand, then we don't mind supporting them.

Windows - DiscreetFX will never sell a version of Aladdin 4D for Windows but a free version will be included with each purchase of A4D for other platforms. DiscreetFX dares to admit what other developers keep to themselves. That Windows is an old legacy code garbage operating system that should be abandon. The failure of Windows Vista in the marketplace only goes to show that Windows days are numbered. The Windows version of Aladdin 4D will not be free but included as a bonus to support customers that may still temperately be using Windows. It will support the industry standard OpenGL and not lock in technology's like DirectX.

Other versions of Aladdin 4D will take advantage of OpenGL or whatever accelerated graphics technology is available on the host operating system. In order for Amiga OS 4.0 and other Amiga type systems to succeed a developer has to take the risk and release professional software to breath new life into OS4.0/AROS/MorphOS. DiscreetFX is willing to take that lead and work hard to reestablish a market. We welcome competition and hope that other developers will also return to the platform and create fresh new software ideas/releases.

Chicago, Illinois & Richmond, VA – August 31st, 2004 -- Visual FX company DiscreetFX LLC Inc., acquired all remaining stock and all rights to the Amiga Video Toaster Flyer software package Millennium held by Nova Design, Inc.

"Earlier this year the CEO of DiscreetFX approached us about buying out Millennium and I am now happy to report we have reached an agreement and completed this.", stated Kermit Woodall; Nova Design CEO. DiscreetFX has purchased all remaining copies of this great add-on software toolset for the Amiga Video Toaster Flyer. DiscreetFX CEO Bill Panagouleas stated, "Millennium represents a good fit for the direction my company is going. DiscreetFX has some interesting plans for Millennium that will be made public very soon."

Interface

The goal in Cinematte's interface is ease of use combined with precise and reproducible results. The interface is designed to look and work like any standard PhotoShop filter. Blue Spill

Blue spill occurs when blue light is reflected, or 'spilled' onto your foreground subject. Matte Adjustments

Light Correction

Unique to Cinematte is our Light Color replacement feature. This allows you to change the color of the lighting cast on your foreground subject. Protection

Nova Design, Inc., producers of the award winning and best selling ImageFX package are proud to announce that PowerStation, volume one, the first package of PowerPC modules for ImageFX is now shipping.

PowerStation is a package of ImageFX modules designed to work directly with the PowerPC as a coprocessor. This speeds up the specific modules up to ten times the speed of the same module running on a native 68060 processor. In many cases the effects become nearly real-time!

PowerStation premiered to record crowds at the Amiga '99 show in St. Louis and became the 'must-have' item of the show with preorders greatly exceeding expectations!

PowerStation Specifics

The PowerPC effects are for use with ImageFX 3.2 or higher only. This first volume of modules includes the following effects, which have all received the PowerPC treatment. The first five modules were originally announced and premiered at the show - by release we have now added three more!

Millennium is not merely a single package. It is a collection of software, scripts, effects, fonts, backgrounds, and other content designed to update your Video Toaster and Flyer dramatically. Millennium was designed to be the largest, most comprehensive, upgrade you could put on your system. Millennium is for the Toaster owner as well as the Flyer owner.

You'll find some old favorites are now part of the Millennium package. Some packages you will be familiar with and some will be brand new to you. Fast Fuel - Adds video deck control to the Toaster/Flyer interface for automatic clip recording.
Electric Scene Knife - This can save you literally hours of work. The Knife can take a FlyerClip and automatically find the different scenes within it, mark them, and even offer to cut them into separate FlyerClips for you.
Flyer Backup - A script based system that can backup your actual FlyerClips to a hard drive or to removable media.
CGPilot - The famous CG ARexx scripts that automate many time consuming CG tasks.
Toaster Wipes and Effects - There are hundreds of these and most are available for both Toaster 3.x and 4.x so both Toaster and Flyer owners can use them. These include wedding wipes, fire wipes, basic animated wipes, cool soft gradient wipes, and fully rotoscoped motion matte wipes.
MegFX - 41 Special wipe effects designed for the Flyer user to create real-time, split screen effects.
Backgrounds - Hundreds of full color, professionally drawn, backgrounds for you to use in your CG pages or in ToasterPaint.
Full motion backgrounds - FlyerClips of animated scenes, fire, and more. You can use these with your Flyer for CG backgrounds or as royalty-free stock footage.

The German ImageFX Manual and Localisation

Finally it is done: ImageFX power user Gunnar Gertzen finalized his German translation of the original ImageFX manual.

The German manual comprises the original black main manual as well as the addendum one and so it has become a 400 page tome.

This book also contains a lot of hints on external programs that can work with ImageFX. The book comes with a disk that contains the official update from 4.0 to 4.1 and the German localisation of ImageFX 4.1.

ImageFX and AmigaOS 3.5

While AmigaOS 3.5 is a fantastic upgrade to our beloved Amiga, it does appear to have a few rough spots. Fortunately none of these are so troublesome that we can't find a way to work around them.

The primary problem discovered so far include the following:

Corrupted/Garbaged Backdrop Image
Missing Cycle Gadgets/Layers Menu
CyberGraphX problems

Here are the suggested fixes for these problems:

With the older picture.datatype (v.43.764) in your Classes/ Dataypes you can use the backdrop.iff. Otherwise you'll have to delete or rename backdrop.iff (found in the ImageFX4 drawer) to prevent it from being accessed.
Use Thorsten Willert's patch that allows both the old and the new chooser.gadget (this is the cause of the cycle gadget problems) co-exist in your Workbench. This patch simply allows the old chooser.gadget to be renamed choozer.gadget. You can find this patch on Aminet and in our FTP site as well.
Reinstall CyberGraphX 4 from it's CDROM. If you don't own CyberGraphX 4 - buy it! It's worth it.

Setting Up A Retina ZIII For 16-bit /24-bit Mode

Make sure you are running RetinaEMU currently.

Hit the CTRL-F8 key combination to bring up the RetinaEMU configuration screen.

Make sure "Show all screen modes?" is check-marked in the Global Settingsmenu.

Set the Workbench Color Depth in the Global Settings menu to either 16 or 24.

Make sure a screen mode is selected in the Retina Screen Mode/Groupmini-window which matches that which should be set in the Retina Screen Modeprogram for either 65536 (16 bit mode) or 16.7 Mil (24 bit mode).
ie: for a 1024x768 display with a refresh rate of 35748x87Hz select thefollowing: 1024x768 35748x87Hz i - Selected in both RetinaEMU and RetinaScreen Mode.

Click on "Workbench" in the Application Screen mini-window.

Set the "Output on" cycle gadget to Retina Standard. This is extremelyimportant. The 16-bit and 24-bit workbench mode support does not work in the Retina Blitter mode.

Click on the Save button to exit RetinaEMU.

Bring up the Workbench Screenmode Prefs program.

Select any display mode and set the width and height to match the width and height of your 16-bit or 24-bit display. Set the Colors slider gadget to 4 and turn on AutoScroll.

Click on the Save button to exit Screenmode Prefs.

Reboot your Amiga and re-start RetinaEMU to enter 16-bit or 24-bitworkbench mode.
